Dear DES Families,
Well the 1st quarter of the school year is nearing an end in just a few weeks. The quarter  ends on Oct. 18 with our 1st report card date of Oct. 25th. You can check grades online anytime or schedule a meeting with your student’s teachers to review grades and stay updated on their progress. As a reminder our Kindergarten students do not have grades online and do not have an official report card until the 2nd quarter period.

The safety of your child and all our children in our schools as well as the safety of the school faculty and support staff is very important to us. In order to maintain a safe environment for  our children to study and learn, it is necessary that we practice our emergency and crisis response plans by having drills to practice our procedures. We will be conducting various drills throughout the remainder of the school year as we do every year to practice procedures for fire and storm situations.

Every year we practice procedures for a “lockdown” situation. However due to the current national climate within which we live and as required by law, this year our “lockdown” drill, which we plan to conduct next week, will include practicing with students present. The middle and high schools conduct lockdown drills periodically, but this is a new process for our elementary. As a teacher I used to conduct these drills with my elementary age students. So I have asked all teachers to discuss the drill and procedures in developmentally appropriate ways to help our students understand the drill and processes.

This type of drill will secure the building and safely shelter all students, staff and visitors inside our building. The purpose of this drill is to keep everyone safe from any danger outside or inside the building. To enable everyone to remain safe, no one will be allowed to enter the building or leave the building until the drill is completed.
