Dear DES Families

Next week begins our next round of Remote Learning. We have decided to participate in a whole school reading adventure in a special project called #OneBookConnects. We’re all going to read the same book together – even though we’re all at home.  Reading this book together will enable your family to share and our school community to reconnect.

The book is A Boy Called Bat, by Elana K. Arnold, about a boy named Bixby Alexander Tam known as Bat.  Bat is a unique boy, who's a little picky about some things. But caring for an abandoned baby skunk opens up a world of sweet lessons that will enrich your whole family.

We ordered copies of the book for each student in our school which will be available along with a reading schedule on Thursday, April 16 and Friday, April 17. The books will be provided in a self-serve process on the sidewalk in front of our school from 8AM - 1PM both days. If unable to make these distribution dates, please contact me at drea@duquoinschools.org or call my office at 542-2646 Ext. 1050 to make arrangements for your child's book. I will have a box to collect completed homework packets at this time as well. Please make sure your child's name and grade level is on the front of the packet.

Our new reading adventure starts on April 20th. Students will still have the online programming with activities and assignments as directed by their teachers. However instead of paper/pencil weekly packets, this whole school reading program will be our focus for the rest of the current school closure. Generally you will be asked to read about 15 minutes per day together, followed by a 30-60 minute activities. We encourage you to invite your extended family to join the fun.

This program includes Daily Family Resource pages – with some trivia questions; a discussion question; and an at-home activity – to enrich your child’s reading experience at home. To access the family resources, read aloud chapters, and more go to: https://readtothem.org/onebook...

Your student can also participate in A Boy Called Bat Contest provided by Read to Them. You will find daily questions and activities on the Read to Them and our social media channels and websites. Your student can share and engage with other students in our school community and across the nation.

So let’s all use Bat and his baby skunk to read together and connect. It's going to be a great community connection and I can't wait to read along with each of you!
